Persuasive speech

For the last speech of the year I think I would give myself an eight out of ten. Personally I think I improved on a lot of the things that I wanted to fix after seeing my self introduction speech such as the hand gestures and the jumpiness. But while attempting to fix these problems I feel like another one arose, a note card reading problem. While preparing my note cards for the speech I came up with a set that had basic outlines of what the section I wanted to say, however when I practiced with these the speech didn't flow like I wanted it to. Coming up on the speech I decided to write down the entire outline on my note cards. Practicing before my speech I wanted to keep eye contact over 80% of the time. But when I actually gave the speech my eye contact seemed to significantly drop. So for next time I think it would be wise to either run it even more with the outlines of the sentences or if I choose to go the same route involving writing out the entire sentence on my note cards, work on keeping eye contact as much as possible. Other than a couple of fumbles I also think that clarity and tone went well too.

  1. Hey Dylan,
I agree that you've improved a lot! What you said about your speech flowing better/ less jumpiness is exactly what I would say too. Even though your eyes were not always on the audience I feel like you keeps enough contact so you reading your cards was not distracting from what you were trying to say. Your stance/posture was strong and your hand gestures were appropriate and enhancing to your speech. Practice always helps more, I had the same problem. Great job over all!

  2. I agree with Joanna, I think you made enough eye contact for the audience to be connected. Of course you had my attention right away with the topic. I definitely didn't expect that one! And don't worry it's possible to have full sentences on a notecard and still not hardly look at them. I almost always have more info than needed on my cards, but with enough practice I feel like I hardly look at them. Your clarity and tone were great, I had no problem understanding you! I'd say something to work on would be your stance. You seem to like to step foward and back oftenly and it's a little distracting. But overall nice job! :)

  3. So I pretty much agree with everything that was said above this.,,
You definitely improved on the jumpiness and in this speech your points flowed together rather than just going from one to other.
I did notice the eye contact thing. At times you seemed a bit distracted by what was on the notecards, but it happens. I did the same thing. I also noticed what Tammy mentioned, you tend to step back and forth while you're talking.
But overall I would say you did a great job and my only advice would be to do a few practice runs before hand.
